International applicants are defined as those who currently hold or are seeking an F1 visa or other non-immigrant visa category authorized to engage in full-time or part-time academic studies. U.S. citizens, U.S. dual citizenship, lawful permanent residents (LPR), pending LPR (with approval notice), DACA, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), political asylees, refugees, or undocumented individuals, should apply as a domestic applicant.

Application Requirements

International Applicants must complete UNC Greensboro’s online application for their student type and fulfill any additional requirements outlined below for Undergraduate or Graduate admissions. In addition applicants will need to submit the following to UNC Greensboro:

  • Submit $65 application fee.
  • Official English language proficiency score report.
  • Copy of valid passport (photo/signature page only).
  • Official transcripts from each college/university attended (View the requirements below based on your student type to see if transcripts are required).

Undergraduate Requirements

In addition to meeting Undergraduate Application Requirements, international applicants should have:

  • Freshmen: GPA 2.5 minimum on 4.0 U.S or equivalent scale (weighted, U.S. high school only).
  • Transfer: GPA 2.0 minimum on 4.0 U.S. or equivalent scale.

Note: Some majors have additional admission criteria and specific deadlines.

Freshman applicants are also subject to meeting UNCG and North Carolina state’s U.S. high school equivalency minimum course guidelines. For transfer students coming from a U.S. institution, copy of valid F1 visa (photo/signature page only), or copy of other valid visa types (ex: H4, E2, L2) is required.

For Freshman Applicants and Transfer Applicants with less than 24 credit hours:

  • Official secondary education/high school transcripts or GED certificate, in English.

For U.S. transcripts, please follow the normal protocol from your institution when ordering official transcripts. For Undergraduate Admissions, the International Recruitment and Admissions Office accepts stamped copies of high school transcripts from U.S. community colleges.

Students with non-U.S. transcripts for their current or prior college/university are required to submit a course-by-course evaluation report with the application. Freshmen with current or prior secondary education transcripts are also required to submit a course-by-course evaluation report, but for the following exceptions below.

You do not need the report if you have any of the following: IB Diploma or IB Track, Standard XII Certificate or equivalent (India only), School Leaving Certificate & Mark Sheets for all exams (Nepal only), a GCSE/IGCSE Statement of Results, or a WASSCE/WAEC score report.  All non-U.S. secondary education credentials, whether externally or in-house evaluated, must meet U.S. high school diploma equivalency.

The purpose of the credential evaluation report is to authenticate your academic credentials and ensure course credit and U.S. grade equivalency are completed accurately.  This also eliminates the need to obtain official, translated transcripts from your school(s) to be sent to UNCG.

UNCG accepts academic evaluation reports from any of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services® (NACES) members or the Association of International Credential Evaluators® (AICE) endorsed member, Scholaro, Inc.

Graduate Requirements

The Graduate School requires a course-by-course evaluation report showing completion of a bachelor’s and a graduate degree (if required by the program) that is equivalent to a U.S. degree from an international college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.

  • A course-by-course evaluation from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES®), showing proof of earned U.S. equivalency bachelor’s degree and/or a graduate degree (if required by the program), credit hours and GPA.
    •  Exception – A credential evaluation is not required for the international undergraduate degree program if the applicant earned or is in the process of earning an advanced degree from an accredited U.S. institution.

A course-by-course evaluation from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES®), showing proof of in process status of U.S. equivalency of a bachelor’s and/or a graduate degree (if required by the program), credit hours and current GPA.

The purpose of the credential evaluation report is to authenticate your academic credentials and ensure course credit and U.S. grade equivalency are completed accurately.  This also eliminates the need to obtain official, translated transcripts from your school(s) being sent to UNCG.

Graduate Admissions accepts academic evaluation reports from any of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services® (NACES)

For international students with a U.S. college/university transcript, a final, official transcript must be sent from the institution(s) directly to The Graduate School as part of the application.  Unofficial copies may be uploaded for review purposes only by logging into your student portal.

  • Government or Non-Profit funded applicants (i.e. SACM, Fulbright, AMIDEAST, Laspau, or USAID) may upload an unofficial copy of their transcripts in English via their application portal.  Sponsored program offices will submit original transcripts on behalf of the applicant, if an offer of admission is extended.
  • India:  Some NAAC, A-rated, Div I (or Class I), three-year Bachelor’s degrees from India may be considered equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree. A WES® course evaluation is highly recommended in this case (i.e., for BA, BCOM, BCA, BSc degrees). Evaluation by WES® does not guarantee that your degree will be equal to a U.S. bachelor’s degree but that WES® is the leading authority on such matters and the best choice for evaluation of your three-year diploma in this category.

In addition to meeting The Graduate School’s General Application Requirements, international applicants must provide evidence of English Language Proficiency (ELP).

Direct Admission

To be considered for direct admission, we accept the following ELP minimum scores:

**ELPs must not be more than 2 years old from the date of application submission.

Exemptions from the ELP include:

  • Successful completion of INTERLINK Level 5 / Level 12 Online Program.
    • Saudi Arabian students: INTERLINK is a SACM approved ESL program.
  • Successful completion of the Mentora College’s Intensive English Program.
  • The applicant is from a country where English is recognized as the primary, official language.
  • The applicant is or will be a graduate of a degree from a U.S. regionally accredited university.
  • The applicant is or will be a graduate of a non-U.S. college/university where English is the primary language of instruction.

Conditional Admission

Applicants who have not met the minimum English language proficiency score may apply for conditional admission.
